Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis Performance at Formula Drift Round 5 Heats Up the Race for Rookie of the Year

Formula Drift Round 5 in Monroe, Washington was greeted with enough rain to cancel most of the Thursday practice session. After the sun finally dried the track late Thursday, rookie drivers including Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis had to become familiar with the course in much shorter of a time than expected. Despite the shortened practice and new track, Odi had no problem qualifying fifth during the Friday qualifying session.

The high qualifying score paired Odi with Robbie Nishida for the Top 32 tandem competition. Only one run of the tandem competition was completed after Nishida broke two axles during the first run and was unable to return to competition. Odi advanced to the Top 16 main event to compete with Formula Drift 2010 series champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. After impressive runs and much deliberation from the judges, Gittin advanced to the Top 8 and Odi took points for a Top 16 finish.

The Top 16 finish and high qualifying score at Round 5 moved Odi into the race for the 2011 Rookie of the Year. Odi is currently the rookie with the highest points standing with a 0.5 lead in points over Walker Wilkerson. The tight gap between the rookies promises exciting competition for the remainder of the season.
