Press Release: Bakchis Begins 2013 Drift Season with Good Standings

16 04 2013

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Rancho Cucamonga, CA – Formula Drift USA entered its tenth season on April 12-13 at the Streets of Long Beach course in southern California.  Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis, 2011 Rookie-of-the-Year, debuted his LS3-powered Nexen Tire 240SX at the event with a strong showing.

After several off-season changes including a new motor and enhanced vehicle set-up, Bakchis was one of the first drivers to qualify at the event under the new “knock-out” qualifying format.  Qualifying 12th, Bakchis was paired with Nexen Tire teammate Joon Maeng for the Top 32 tandem competition and then advanced to the Top 16 main event.

Driving for a sold-out crowd, Bakchis was paired with Kenneth Moen for the Top 16 competition.  Moen’s rear bumper dragged behind the car and, as the following driver, Bakchis was forced to avoid the bumper that eventually detached and hit Bakchis’ vehicle.  Bakchis then completed his lead run and ultimately finished the event in good standings as 12th overall in the series.

As 12th overall after the first event, Bakchis has shown that he and his team will be a strong contender in the 2013 drift season.  Upcoming events for Bakchis include participation in the inaugural Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 19-20 and Formula Drift Round 2 at Road Atlanta in Georgia on May 10-11.

Purple Bammer Jammer Power!

10 03 2013

I was recently in Las Vegas to judge the first round of Vegas Pro Am (which was awesome). While I was at the track my car got a makeover at 702 Graphics because I know how to treat her right.

I left the car at the shop and it was black, judged the event, came back and the Nexen Tire Nissan 240SX was already Nexen- purple.

Add some graphic design.

Add some (not all) of the logos.  And then check out the new look, 2013 spring fashion at its best.

Gotta Know the Rules to Qualify

5 02 2013

While reading the 2013 Formula Drift rules to prepare for next season, I came across the new qualifying format. It turns out that qualifying this year will be in a “knockout” format. Huh?

In short, the top 16 qualifiers will be determined after the first qualifying run. The remaining drivers (17 through X) will complete their second qualifying run and will keep the better score of the two runs. Those remaining drivers will then be seeded in the 17 through 32 qualifier positions. It also looks like there will be a scaled approach for awarding speed points, unlike the 0 and 10 point options we saw in 2012.

This will be interesting enough and seems like it will reward consistency from the start of each event. Unfortunately, it looks like this method will not reward a driver for laying down a perfect second run. We’ll see if this qualifying approach is put into action at Long Beach and, if it is, then I am definitely up for the challenge in the Nexen Tire S14.

The new M7 Drive Energy Drink / Nexen tire S14 is alive!

The New Build, Part III

2 10 2012

In case you’re just catching up, we have been under a bit of a time crunch to build an entirely new M7 Drive Energy Drink/Nexen Tire S14 chassis before Formula Drift Round 7 on October 12-13, 2012.  This has been going on for a few weeks and now we are finally wrapping up the build.

Last you heard, the engine and transmission were installed.  Since then, all mechanical systems have been set up.  This includes some cool parts:

Mishimoto Cooling System, with a Mishimoto radiator, oil cooler, and power steering cooler.

EBC Brake System with EBC rotors and EBC yellows as brake pads.

Feal Suspension System using Feal 441 Coilovers and new Battle Version arms including new lower control arms for greater adjustability.

All of these systems now supplement the transmission with Clutch Masters clutch and the LS2 motor built by CBM that was salvaged from the previous car.   We also used radiator and intake hoses from HPS Silicone Hoses.

After everything was put back together, 702 Graphics installed the vinyl to give the car a facelift.

We finally started the car and even took it out to Adam’s Motorsports Park and Willow Springs International Raceway for testing and tuning.  The M7 Drive Energy Drink/Nexen Tire S14 is ready to make its competition debut at Formula D Round 7 in Irwindale, CA, so come stop by and say hello at the final event of the season!

The New Build, Part II

19 09 2012

As you read in Part I, the new S14 chassis was recently caged, painted, and prepped for hands-on work.  In the past week, we’ve gotten down and dirty as we make progress on the new build.

First, the rear subframe was installed.

Thanks to good friends, the engine and transmission were then installed.  The LS2 motor and the four-speed dog box transmission were both in decent shape after Las Vegas and are now in the new car.  Thanks to Sikky a few damaged engine swap pieces are now replaced and ready to go.

A tubular front core support was fabricated and is now in place.

The battery was relocated to the trunk, similar to my old S14.

The fire suppression system and e-brake system were hooked up.  My M7 Japan Bride passenger seat was moved into the new car.

My old cracked dash, including the sweet M7 Japan gauges, was relocated to the new car.  Now my interior looks and (almost) feels like the old car.

We are well on the way to completing this new build.  Stay tuned for the next part which will feature several key components from Mishimoto, Feal Suspension, Battle Version, etc.
